But what’s hardest to put into words is this: we had everything ready. The vision was built, the artists were booked, the community was gathered. And the storm took away our chance to actually deliver what we’d promised: the joy of dance, the pride of performance, and the comfort of community, for everyone who showed up.</p><p><br/></p><p>At around 2:15pm, we had just wrapped a community modern dance class with Stephanie Powell. There was a thunderstorm headed our way, and we wanted to get folks to safety for what we thought would be a brief rain delay. <br/><br/>After clearing out festival-goers, our team started reworking the schedule, figuring out how to get everyone back once the rain passed.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then, I got the call from the park. The extent of the damage was beyond our imagination. Our tents had blown into nearby power lines. The marley floor for our dancers was waterlogged and unsalvageable. Equipment was destroyed. Even a proclamation we received from the city was soaked through, the citation blurred, ink running to the edges of the paper.<br/><br/>There was no way to continue the festival. I had to call all our youth companies, professional performers, and drill teams to give them the bad news.</p><p><br/></p><p>Listen, we respect Mother Nature. What I’m still sitting with, two weeks later, is that everyone showed up ready, and we still couldn’t give this community the thing we built all year to give them.</p><p><br/></p><p>I do not yet know the full extent of the financial damage we are facing. What I do know is this: we are committed to paying artists for their work, no matter what happens around it.
